Washington's Headquarters - Newburgh, NY
On April 19, 1783, George Washington issued an order for the "cessation
of hostilities", which formally ended the fighting of the American
Revolutionary War. The official treaty was signed with the British in
Paris, France on September 3, 1783. The Hasbrouck House in Newburgh, New
York served as Washington's headquarters during the Revolutionary War
from April 1782 until August 1783. Because of its historical importance
it became the first publicly-owned historical site in the country and
was declared a national landmark in 1961. The stamp, featuring a rendering
of the Hasbrouck house, was issued on April 19, 1933 to commemorate the
150th anniversary of the proclamation.
