The Maryland Tercentenary

The stamp was issued on March 23, 1934 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Maryland's settlement. By 1632 the colony of Maryland had been established. The "Ark" and the "Dove" were two ships that sailed from England in 1633 bringing more settlers to Maryland. The ships arrived on March 3, 1634. On March 25th they disembarked to settle in the colony. In 1776, during the American Revolution, Maryland became one of the 13 original states. From November 26, 1783 to June 3, 1784, Annapolis, Maryland served as the United States capital until land could be set aside as the District of Columbia to become the nation's capital in 1790.
