Mt Rainier National
Park
The stamp was issued on August 3, 1934 as part of the 10 stamp National
Park series. Established on March 2, 1899 as America's fifth national park,
it includes Mt Rainier located near Seattle, Washingon and 236,381 acres
of surrounding land. Mt Rainier has a height of over 14,000 feet and is
a popular area for mountain-climbing. It is currently an inactive volcano
but is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because
of it's potential for widespread devastation should it erupt. The national
park contains 25 glaciers, exquisite subalpine wildflower meadows, abundant
wildlife including 91,000 acres of old-growth forests, valleys and waterfalls.
Nearly 1.8 million people visit the park every year. |
