Mesa Verde National
Park
Mesa Verde National Park was created in 1906 by President Theodore
Roosevelt to protect some of the most outstanding cliff-dwellings in the
world. As the only archeological national park in the United States, there
are over 600 cliff-dwellings and 4000 sites in an area of 81.4 square miles
built by the Anasazi people 3000 years ago. The park is located in the southwest
section of Colorado near the Four Corners. It draws almost 600,000 visitors
per year. The stamp, part of the 1934 National Park series, was issued on
September 24, 1934.
