Yellowstone National
Park
One of the world's most active geothermal areas, Yellowstone National
Park is located mostly in the state of Wyoming with an area of 2.2 million
acres. The park was dedicated as the first national park on March 1, 1872
by President Ulysses S. Grant. The central area of the park sits atop a
giant volcanic caldera which is the collapsed top of a volcano. The hotspot
beneath Yellowstone produces more than 10,000 geothermal features. The Old
Faithful geyser, depicted on this stamp is perhaps Yellowstone's most famous
attraction. The stamp was issued by the United States Post Office on July
30, 1934. |
