Acadia National Park
The Acadia National Park stamp was issued on October 2, 1934 as part
of the National Park stamp series. The park comprises nearly 48,000 acres
of land near Bar Harbor, Maine on Mt Desert Island. It was the first national
park established east of the Mississippi River as Lafayette National Park
on February, 26, 1919 under the administration of President Woodrow Wilson.It
was renamed Acadia in 1929. The park features mountains, woodlands, lakes,
ponds, and ocean shoreline. Cadillac Mountain is probably its most popular
attraction which at 1,530 feet is the highest point on the U.S. Atlantic
coast. With more than 140 hiking trails, 50 historic gravel carriage roads
and two campgrounds, it is among the 20 most visited national parks in the
U.S. |
