Glacier
National Park
Glacier National Park encompasses over 1 million acres of pristine
land in northwest Montana on the Canadian border. It was established as
a national park on May 11, 1910. Of the 150 glaciers which existed in the
park in the early 1900's, only about 37 exist today. Scientists speculate
that if global warming continues to increase at its current pace, all the
glaciers will dissapear by 2020. The area is part of the Rocky Mountains
and is home to 1000 species of plants, hundreds of species of birds and
animals, more than a dozen varieties of fish in over 700 different lakes.
The area is such an important esosystem that is was declared a World Heritage
area in 1995. The stamp was issued on August 27, 1934 and features a rendering
of Mt Sinopah and Two Medicine lake. |
