Great Smoky Mountain
National Park
Great Smoky Mountain National Park was officially dedicated by Franklin
D. Roosevelt in September, 1940 and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It
covers about 521,000 acres divided between the states of Tennessee and North
Carolina. The Great Smoky Mountain range, part of the Blue ridge Mountains,
is a section of the Appalachian Mountains. It had 9.4 million visitors in
2010 making it the most heavily attended nationl park in the United States.
An area of old growth forests with 16 mountain peaks at more than 6,000
ft, it is home to more than 17,000 documented species of plants and animals.
There are 800 miles of trails including 72 miles of the famous Appalachian
Trail which passes through the center of the park. The stamp was issued
on August 27, 1934. |
