Michigan Centenary

Issued on November 1, 1935, the stamp celebrates the 100th anniversary of Michigan's statehood. From 1787 to 1800, it was part of the Northwest Territory. As more settlers went west especially after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1835, a constitutional convention was finally held, and on October 5, 1835, the people ratified Michigan's constitution. However, because of territorial disputes, congress did not admit Michigan into the Union until January 26, 1837, becoming the 26th state.
