Hawaii Territory
This 3 cent stamp, part of a series on U.S. territories, honors
Kamehameha, the first King of Hawaii. Prior to Kamehameha, the Hawaiian
Islands were individually ruled by several chiefs. It was Kamehameha I
(1736-1819) who united the Hawaiian islands into one kingdom. The stamp,
issued on October 18, 1937, shows the gilded statue of King Kamehameha
that stands today at the Aliiolani Hale building in Honolulu.
