Mount Rushmore National
Monument
Issued on August 11, 1952, the stamp commemorates the 25th anniversary
of the dedication of Mount Rushmore National Monument. The Mount Rushmore
National Memorial is a sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore,
located in the Black Hills region of South Dakota near Keystone. It features
60-foot high sculptures of the heads of four United States presidents: George
Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Designed
by Gutzon Borglum in 1927 construction was completed in 1941. The memorial
covers 1,278 acres, and is a popular tourist attraction drawing 3 million
visitors per year. |
