Wild Turkey Conservation
This 3 cent stamp issued on May 5, 1956 at the convention of the
Wisconsin Federation of Stamp Clubs is the first of three stamps released
in 1956 highlighting the importance of wildlife conservation in America.
The wild turkey offers an outstanding example of the conservation efforts
carried on by Federal and State Governments at the time of this stamp's
release. In the early 1900's, the turkey was on the brink of extinction.
It was estimated that only 30,000 birds remained as late as1932. By 1956
wildlife managers had restored the bird's habitat and population so that
it was no longer threatened. Today, wild turkeys can be found in almost
every wooded area in America.
