Devils Tower National Monument
Devils Tower National Monument is located in the northeast corner
of Wyoming near the small town of Hulett. Established on September 24,
1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt, it was the very first area to be
proclaimed a national monument under the Antiquities Act of 1906. Fifty
years later on September 24, 1956, the US Post Office Department issued
this 3-cent stamp in its honor. Although the monument's area is only 1,347
acres it attracts more than 400,000 visitors per year. Admired as a spectacular
geological formation, it is a very challenging rock climb as well. Towering
1,280 feet
above the surrounding area, it is considered a sacred landmark by more
than twenty Native American tribes.
