Forest Conservation
The 4-cent Forest Conservation stamp was issued on October 27,
1958, in Tucson, Arizona, at the Annual Meeting of the American Forestry
Association. In 1992, the American Forestry Association changed its name
to American Forests. Founded In 1875, American Forests is the oldest national
nonprofit conservation organization in the United States. Its mission
is to protect and expand Americas forests. Besides providing education
they have planted more than 40 million trees since 1990, restored watersheds
to help provide clean drinking water, replanted forests destroyed by fires
or clear-cutting and restored forest habitats that in turn provide home
and shelter for other wildlife. The date of issue coincides with the 100th
anniversary of Theodore Roosevelt's birth, a president known for his love
of America's wilderness.
