Soil Conservation

This stamp was issued on August 26, 1959 for the opening of the annual Soil Conservation Society conference in Rapid City, South Dakota. The society was founded in 1943 and changed its name to the Soil and Water Conservation Society in 1987. The mission of the organization is to foster the science and art of natural resource management for sustainability. Their work targets conservation of soil, water, and related natural resources on working land and to discover, develop, implement, and constantly improve ways to use land that sustains its productive capacity and enhances the environment at the same time. SWCS has over 5,000 members around the world. There are now 75 chapters in the Unites States and Canada.
