Camp Fire Girls

The Camp Fire Girls started as a youth organization in 1910 by Dr. Luther Gulick and his wife Charlotte to provide the same opportunities for girls as the Boy Scouts of America did for boys. The Camp Fire Girls was the first nonsectarian, multicultural organization for girls in America. Its programs emphasize camping and other outdoor activities for youth. Officially incorporated as an organization in 1912, the Camp Fire Girls had attained a membership of 60,000 by the end of 1913. In 1975 the organization became co-educational and admitted boys for the first time. Today the organization with headquarters in Kansas City, MO, and known simply as Camp Fire, serves more than 300,000 youth in its programs each year throughout the U.S.A. This postage stamp issued on November 1, 1960 commemorated the 50th anniversary of it's founding.
