Sam Houston

This Sam Houston Issue stamp features a portrait of Sam Houston. He was born in Virginia in 1793. Houston’s family later moved to Tennessee, where he enlisted to serve the War of 1812. Following the war, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives for Tennessee and later, was elected as governor of Tennessee. In 1835, he moved to Texas, where he served in the Texas Army as it fought for its independence. Houston rose up the ranks to become Commander-in-Chief and signed the Texas Declaration of Independence in 1836. He was elected twice as President of the Republic of Texas. Following his presidency, and the annexation of Texas by the United States in 1945, he was elected to the United States Senate for Texas.
