John Muir

This stamp commemorates John Muir (April 21, 1838 – December 24, 1914 ), the great naturalist and conservationist. Through his books, lectures and a deep friendship with President Theodore Roosevelt, John was influential in helping to establish the National Parks especially Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. During his lifetime John Muir published over 300 articles and 12 books. He co-founded the Sierra Club, which helped establish a number of national parks after he died. Muir has been called the "patron saint of the American wilderness" and "The Father of the National Parks."
