The Fine Arts

This 5-cent Fine Arts commemorative postage stamp was first placed on sale in Washington, DC, on December 2, 1964. The stamp is based on a lithograph by the late Stuart Davis, who was regarded a top-ranking modernist. John Ross modified the Davis design for the Giori press. Due to the arrangement of the colors, the sheets had to be run through the press twice, resulting in two plate numbers on each pane. This stamp was issued in panes of fifty and had an initial printing of 120 million stamps authorized
