Texas Centennial

This stamp commemorates the 100th anniversary of the battle at the Alamo, a turning point in Texas' history. In 1820, Stephen Austin founded an American colony in what was then Mexican territory. The colony grew and by 1836 there were 30,000 residents. Mexico then stopped the immigration when
it feared so many American settlers in its territory. There were fights with Mexican soldiers and after Texas formed its own government, General Santa Anna ruler of Mexico, attacked Texas soldiers at the Alamo, a fortress once used as a missionary building and gained control. After Santa Anna ordered the execution of the soldiers it had captured, Texans revolted and General Sam Houston led the Texas army to victory over Santa Anna and Texans won their independence. This commemorative was issued on March 2, 1936.
