Texas Statehood

Texas, the second largest American State after Alaska, has a long history. First settled by Spain in the 1600's, it became a part of Mexico when Mexico became independent of Spain in 1821. Around the same time, an American colony was established by Samuel Austin which grew rapidly. In 1834
with about 30,000 Americans living in Texas, Mexico became governed by dictator General Antonio López de Santa Anna. Texas declared it's independence from Mexico shortly thereafter. In 1836 after a bloody battle with Santa Anna, Texans overthrew the dictator and became an independent territory. Texas became the 28th American state to join the Union on December 29, 1845. The stamp, issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of statehood was released on December 29, 1945
